The Book of Luke: The Role of Women in Jesus’ Ministry

The Role of Women in Jesus’ Ministry: Luke 8:1-3, 10:38-42

Luke 8:1-3 and 10:38-42 highlight the significant role of women in Jesus' ministry:

*Luke 8:1-3 - Women Supporters of Jesus*

1 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him.

2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out.

3 and Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod's household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

*Luke 10:38-42 - Martha and Mary*

38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.

39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said.

40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"

41 "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things.

42 But few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

*Key Points:*

1. Women were integral to Jesus' ministry, supporting him financially and spiritually (Luke 8:1-3).

2. Women were disciples and learners, like Mary (Luke 10:39).

3. Jesus valued women's contributions and recognized their worth (Luke 8:2-3, 10:42).

*Notable Women in Jesus' Ministry:*

1. Mary Magdalene (Luke 8:2, John 20:1-18)

2. Joanna (Luke 8:3)

3. Susanna (Luke 8:3)

4. Martha (Luke 10:38-42, John 11:1-44)

5. Mary, mother of Jesus (Luke 1:26-38, 2:1-20)

*Reflection Questions:*

1. How do these passages challenge or affirm your views on women's roles in ministry?

2. What can you learn from the examples of Mary and Martha?

3. How can you support and empower women in their spiritual journeys?
